Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and IT sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.10%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Advantage Oil&Gas Ltd. (TSX:AAV), which rose 6.54% or 0.56 points to trade at 9.12 at the close. Meanwhile, Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) added 6.20% or 0.31 points to end at 5.31 and CES Energy Solutions Corp (TSX:CEU) was up 5.89% or 0.53 points to 9.53 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Superior Plus Corp (TSX:SPB), which fell 4.24% or 0.27 points to trade at 6.10 at the close. Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:EFR) declined 3.96% or 0.40 points to end at 9.71 and Aya Gold&Silver Inc (TSX:AYA) was down 3.84% or 0.53 points to 13.27.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 474 to 436 and 123 ended unchanged.

Shares in CES Energy Solutions Corp (TSX:CEU) rose to 5-year highs; rising 5.89% or 0.53 to 9.53.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.40% to 11.78.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.84% or 22.10 to $2,653.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.26% or 0.18 to hit $69.06 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.27% or 0.20 to trade at $73.11 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.15% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.35% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 106.61.
