Investing.com - Canadian equities started with losses on Friday. The top gainers were the Renewable Energy and Clean Technology index, the Capped Utilities Index and the Capped Communication Services Index. The top losers were Capped Materials, Capped Consumer Staples and Capped Energy indices.

At the market open in Toronto, the TSX Composite Index fell 0.50%. The TSX Venture and the TSX Smallcap were also down. The TSX Venture dropped 0.53%, while the Smallcap was down by 0.80%.

Top Gainers:

• Storage Vault (TSX:SVI): Increased 9.65% or 0.36 points to 4.09.
• Innergex (TSX:INE) Renewable Energy: Rose 6.46% or 0.55 points to 9.07.
• Altus Group (TSX:AIF): Climbed 4.51% 2.52 points to 58.35

Top Losers:

• IAMGold (TSX:IMG): Fell 7.37% or 0.66 points to 8.30
• Ivanhoe Mines (TSX:IVN): Dropped 5.36% or 0.91 points to 15.97.
• Sienna Senior Living (TSX:SIA): Declined 4.03% or 0.66 points to 15.71.

In Commodities Trading:

• April Brent Oil Contract declined by 1.32% or 1.01 points to 75.47 a barrel.
• Crude Oil for April delivery fell 1.04 points to 71.44 a barrel.
• Gold Futures for April delivery dropped by 6.59 points to 2,949.51 a troy ounce.

Currency Markets:

• USD/CAD is stable at 1.4181.
• EUR/CAD is trading at 1.4867.
• The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 106.400.

Economic Calendar Events

Today's main economic calendar for Canada has retail sales data and Bank of Canada Governor Macklem’s speech in focus. All retail sales data was better than expected.
