The Government of the United Kingdom (U.K.) is considering a ban on very powerful artificial-general intelligence (%AI) systems.

An A.I. Council established by the British government has said that powerful A.I. applications and platforms may have to be banned to protect the public and industry.

Members of the A.I. Council have called for strong transparency and audit requirements, as well as more safety measures regarding A.I. technology.

The U.K. government is not the only one to raise the prospect of regulating A.I.

Governments in the European Union and United States have each said that a voluntary code of practice for artificial intelligence is needed.

Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and European Union Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said at a joint press conference that voluntary rules for A.I. are needed quickly.

The European Union has drafted an “Artificial Intelligence Act” that is among the first pieces of legislation that seeks to regulate A.I. However, it is still working its way through the legislative process.

The A.I. Council is an independent committee that provides advice to the U.K. government and political leaders on the growth and potential impacts of artificial intelligence.

Several prominent technology leaders, including Sam Altman of %OpenAI, recently issued a warning, saying that the rapid rise of artificial intelligence could lead to human extinction.
