The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has begun tracking foreign ownership of U.S. farmland.

The department has launched a new online portal where purchases of U.S. agricultural land by foreign persons or organizations can be reported.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump said in a news release that the portal is part of a broader effort to protect American farmland under the "National Farm Security Action Plan."

"This move to streamline the reporting portal will increase compliance and assist our efforts to effectively enforce accurate reporting of interests held by foreign adversaries in U.S. farmland," said the USDA in its news release.

As of late 2023, foreign investors held only 3.6% (roughly 45.85 million acres) of all U.S. agricultural land, according to the USDA.

However, foreign ownership of U.S. farmland has increased by 85% since 2010, according to the USDA.

Canadian investors currently hold the largest share of U.S. farmland, mostly around the border between the two countries.

Other countries that own U.S. farmland include the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany.

The new portal to track foreign ownership of U.S. farmland can be found at: afida.landmark.usda.gov
